Conductors

Bournemouth Concert Brass has been fortunate over the years to have benefited from the musical excellence, experience and expertise of some fine conductors. The bands current professional conductor is Matthew Brown.

BCB acknowledges the time and effort put in behind the scenes and support given to our Professional conductors by our own Resident Conductor Bill Willis. Bill not only maintains the bands library of music but also produces a number of arrangements for the band.

Professional Conductor - Melvin White

Melvin is one of bandings most experienced conductors. He has a Salvation Army background & studied at the Royal College of Music and the London College of Music.
Melvin has directed Championship Bands in the London area, the West of England, the Midlands and Wales. He has qualified for National finals on over 30 occasions, the vast proportion at The Royal Albert Hall.

BCB are please to be associated with Melvin  and enjoy the experience he brings to the band.

Resident Conductor - Bill Willis

Bill Willis - ConductorBill joined Bournemouth Concert Brass in 1993 and is currently also the band's solo Eb Bass player. Raised in Poole with a Salvation Army background Bill was encouraged to play and write by well known local musicians including Malcolm Wheale and Alwyn Green (BSO) and Glyn Bosanko. In addition to studying conducting with Russell Gray, Bill is a fine composer and arranger and has had many of his compositions and arrangements used in brass band competitions and recordings. He has been called upon to conduct many local bands including, Hyde, Verwood, Downton, Gosport & Solent, Poole and Ferndown. Bill lives locally and works in IT support.

Professional Conductor - Nigel Taken ALCM. LLCM. GCM.

Nigel has been conducting brass bands at the very highest level for more than 25 years.
At the age of 15 he became the flugelhorn soloist with the City of Coventry Band and also played regularly with Harry Mortimer's All Star Brass and his Men O' Brass. Moving to London to study music, Nigel's trumpet tutor was the late Dennis Egan and after several years playing professionally, he moved into brass and music teaching. He is currently Music Co-ordinator at Goffs School in Hertfordshire, where he has worked for 24 years.
Nigel has many contest successes to his name, including victories at the West of England Championship Area contest and the London and Home Counties Championship Area contest. He has also conducted winning performances at the Grand Shield in 2006 and at the Yeovil Entertainment Contest as well as appearing at the National Championship Finals at the Royal Albert Hall, the British Open Championships and the All England International Masters many times.
Nigel is in great demand as a conductor and band trainer and works with many bands on a freelance basis. He has recently accepted the role of Professional Conductor of Bournemouth Concert Brass once again.

Previous Conductor - Major David Barringer BMus(Hons)

Professional Conductor - Major David BarringerDavid enlisted in the army in 1989. studied music at Pirbright and then at Kneller Hall and was runner up in the 1998 Young Conductor of the Year competition going on to represent Great Britain in the 2000 European competition. Continued personal development resulted in a Bachelor of Music Hons. degree. David instigated the British Army brass band in 2007. In 2008 he was appointed to Kneller Hall's Directorate of Corps Army Music, Royal Signals based in Blandford.

David's association with BCB started in 2009 since when the band has been successful both in the area and National Finals resulting in the bands Championship status for 2012. The latest qualification for the Championship National finals at the Albert Hall in October in 2012 is a tribute to David's relationship, training and commitment to BCB.
